Shropshire Pond Fish
Thinking of having a fish pond? If you are worried about maintenance then don't. Fish care is relatively low maintenance.
Fish are dormant through the Winter months so only need feeding once or twice a day in the warmer months of the year.
What will I need?
You will need a pump and filter to add oxygen to the pond and keep it clean. The filter and pond itself will require cleaning twice a year but this is straight-forward and if you wish we can do this for you. Click Pond cleaning for more details.
If you are looking to have a new pond built then you will need to decide what numbers and type of fish you would like to introduce to your pond as this will influence the pond size.
The pond must be built to accommodate the number of fish that will be introduced to the pond allowing for fish growth and possible reproduction. For example Koi normally need a minimum depth of 3 feet whereas Goldfish could easily survive in 12 - 18 inches of water.
If you have an existing pond then the current water volume will dictate how many fish the pond can sustain.

Choosing Fish
Regarding the choice of fish, there are hundreds of different varieties of Koi alone but typical other fish introduced into garden ponds are Goldfish, Orfe, Shabumkins and Tench.
Beware of buying fish from unknown sources. Unless you know what you are looking for, you could easily introduce a diseased or infected fish into a pond of healthy fish, infecting the existing stock. Only use a reputable supplier.
