Shropshire Pond Cleaning
Keeping your fish pond or wildlife pond clean does not have to be a chore. To start with you need a good reliable filtration system (especially if you have fish). In addition we recommend a complete pond clean at least once a year.
We do recommend the use of gravity or pressurised filter systems to keep on top of debris and fish waste.
For fish ponds we also recommend the use of Ultraviolet (UV) filters which minimises growth of algae and blanket weed caused by the effects of sunlight on water. However even with a powerful UV bulb there will always be a certain amount of algae and blanketweed in the pond.
A good filtration system should do three things:
If you do not have a filter system or your filter system needs upgrading we can advise and install a system to meet your needs.
- Solids filtration
- Chemical filtration
- Ultraviolet filtration

Even with the best filtration systems, there will always be an accumulation of debris and silt in the bottom of the pond. If the pond is not covered, leaves will inevitably end up in the bottom of the pond and as they break down they produce Nitrates which are harmful to fish. In addition fish waste itself will add Ammonia and Nitrates to the water.
Whether you have a fish pond or a wildlife pond, it will benefit greatly from an annual pond clean. We offer a wildlife pond and fish pond cleaning service covering the whole of Shropshire including Bridgnorth, Church Stretton, Cleobury Mortimor, Craven Arms, Ellesmere, Ironbridge, Ludlow, Market Drayton, Much Wenlock, Newport, Oswestry, Shifnal, Shrewsbury, Telford, Wem, and Whitchurch.
We clean most garden ponds once to twice a year. We recommend a clean after Winter to clear out any dead matter in the pond and then again at the end of the Summer, clearing any algae and blanket weed. However we can clean ponds all year around and can arrange a date and time to suit you. For smaller ponds, one pond clean after Winter is usually sufficient.
Shropshire pond clean
A typical fish pond clean would be as follows:
If you have fish, it is important that they are returned to the pond as soon as possible. For most small to medium size garden ponds we can complete the process in one day minimising any stress or disturbance for the fish.
- Pump some pond water into holding tank (we have a variety of tanks depending on the size and number of fish involved)
- Move fish into holding tank. This should be sited in a shady area and in some cases an air pump provides a constant stream of Oxygen into the water to keep the fish from getting stressed.
- Pump the remaining pond water onto beds or down the nearest drain. Silt contains a lot of nutrients and makes excellent fertilizer so this normally goes on flower beds.
- Completely scrub inside of pond and wash down with clean water
- Clean the pump and the filter within the pump if it has one
- Clean the filter system
- If there are any waterfalls or streams those are also cleaned
- Refill pond with clean tap water monitoring the temperature and the chlorine levels
- Once the water temperature has stabilised and the Chlorine dispersed, reintroduce fish into the pond
- Thoroughly tidy and clean site
For larger ponds where it is not possible to do all this in one day, we set up a small pump and filter system to clean and oxygenate the holding tank overnight. The holding tank is also covered with netting to protect the fish overnight.
We have all the equipment necessary including high capacity water pumps, specialist holding tanks, nets and everything necessary to ensure your fish are kept safe and well whilst the pond clean is carried out.
Note: We do not recommend the use of pond vacuum equipment. We have trialled this equipment ourselves and found it to be highly ineffective. We know many people who have bought this equipment, and have still had to call us in to clean their pond out manually. A pond vacuum will only do part for the job. There is no substitute for a complete pond clean manually cleaning every part of the pond and its pump/filter system and replacing the water.
If you are unlucky enough to have a leaking pond then don't worry. Butyl and PVC livers can be fixed with specialist adhesives and concrete rendered liners can be fixed with a waterproof mortar. If necessary we can even reline the whole pond for you.
If you do have a leaking pond then the easiest and most cost-effective way of dealing with it is to clean the pond out at the same time for you. We can then get in the pond, fully inspect the liner and fix it as necessary.
The cost depends on the size of the pond and how much work is required but a full one day clean and service can cost as little as £200.
We cover the whole of Shropshire including Telford, Shrewsbury, Albrighton, Bridgnorth, Church Stretton, Cleobury Mortimor, Craven Arms, Ellesmere, Ironbridge, Ludlow, Market Drayton, Much Wenlock, Newport, Oswestry, Shawbury, Shifnal, Wem, and Whitchurch.
